  • dc.description.abstract
  • The in-depth development of the Internet and social media has made online reviews an important source of information influencing consumer decisions. The widespread language imitation behavior in reviews, where users intentionally or unintentionally copy the language content or style of others' comments, has been proven to enhance the persuasiveness of reviews. However, existing research mostly focuses on the single effect or mechanism of language imitation, failing to systematically reveal the dynamic adaptation rules and boundary conditions of its effectiveness in different consumption scenarios. Based on this, this study aims to explore the matching effect of online review language imitation (content imitation vs. style imitation), that is, how it adapts to product types (functional vs. experiential) and platform interactivity (high vs. low), and influences its communication effectiveness (with purchase intention as the core observation variable) through differentiated psychological mechanisms. This study integrates the Elaboration Likelihood Model (ELM) and Social Identity Theory (SIT) to construct a "context-psychology-behavior" theoretical analysis framework. The study proposes that product type systematically regulates the dominant path of language imitation: for functional products, language content imitation emphasizing parameters and factual descriptions is more effective by enhancing consumers' perceived diagnosticity (cognitive path); for experiential products, language style imitation focusing on emotions and style rendering is more effective by evoking consumers' emotional resonance (emotional path). Further, platform interactivity as a key boundary condition, regulates the above matching effect and its psychological mechanism: low-interactivity platforms (such as traditional e-commerce) strengthen the path of "functional product-content imitation" influencing purchase intention through perceived diagnosticity; while high-interactivity platforms (such as social e-commerce) amplify the path of "experiential product-style imitation" influencing purchase intention through emotional resonance. To verify the theoretical hypotheses, this paper conducts empirical tests through three rigorous online controlled experiments. Experiment 1 uses smartphones (functional) and high-end mattresses (experiential) as stimuli to preliminarily verify the significant matching effect between product type and language imitation type (H1). Experiment 2 introduces printers (functional) and tourist hotels (experiential) as new stimuli, and on the basis of re-verifying the matching effect, confirms through the Process mediation analysis model the mediating role of perceived diagnosticity in the "functional product-content imitation" path (H2a), and the mediating role of emotional resonance in the "experiential product-style imitation" path (H2b). Experiment 3 further introduces platform interactivity as a moderating variable, using juicers (functional) and perfumes (experiential) as stimuli, and simulating the interfaces of Taobao (low interactivity) and Douyin (high interactivity) platforms. The results confirm that platform interactivity not only moderates the direct effect of product type-language imitation matching on purchase intention (H3), but also moderates its influence on perceived diagnosticity (H4a) and emotional resonance (H4b), thus constituting a moderated mediation model. The main conclusions of this study are as follows: (1) There is a significant contextual adaptation effect in online review language imitation, that is, the matching of functional products with content imitation and experiential products with style imitation can more effectively enhance consumers' purchase intention. (2) The above matching effects are achieved through dual mediation mechanisms of perceived diagnosticityand emotional resonance. (3) Platform interactivity is a key moderating variable, with low-interactivity platforms strengthening the rational cognitive path of "functional product-content imitation" matching, and high-interactivity platforms amplifying the emotional path of "experiential product-style imitation" matching. The theoretical contributions of this study are as follows: First, by integrating ELM and SIT, a dynamic adaptive explanatory framework was constructed and verified, breaking through the limitations of previous studies on single mechanisms or contexts, and clarifying the boundary conditions for the effectiveness of language imitation strategies. Second, it clarified the dominance of the dual mediating paths of perceived diagnosticity and emotional resonance under different product attributes and their complex relationships regulated by platform interactivity, deepening the understanding of the micro-mechanisms of language persuasion. Third, it elevated platform interactivity from a static background to a core moderating variable, empirically demonstrating the active shaping role of platform media characteristics on marketing communication effectiveness, and expanding the theoretical connotation of the platform context. Practically, the study provides precise strategic guidance for enterprises and platforms to optimize online review management, suggesting that content imitation or style imitation reviews be differentiatedly guided and displayed based on the "product-platform" dual-dimensional context to enhance the dissemination effectiveness and conversion rate of online reviews. Finally, this paper points out the research limitations and looks forward to future explorations in directions such as AI-generated reviews, the effects of negative reviews, and the application of neuroscientific methods.
