  • With more than 2,000 years of world culture history, Scandal, which involved in some kind of cross-border actions, is very serious event that aroused the public attention. Scandal in the media society obeys the media operation rules, according to news narrative framework and expressing as news all the time from the disclosure, communication, discussion to the end in the media. In the latest study, German media scholar Steffen Burkhardt and Frederike Wolf M. A. named that scandal emerged and developed in the media as a"media scandal." In this paper, the author have adopted the same concept and defined the"scandal coverage" as the activities of all the news reports to the"media scandal" event conducted by media and its respective journalists. Scandal discussed in modern society is basically the same as the scandals discussed in the media reports. The scandal appeared in this study were from the news reports nowadays and if not specified, all the scandals can be considered as"media scandal" and have their own characteristics. The ethics of Journalism is about ethics in news reporting, especially the media law and ethics of the moral system. News of the content of ethics in general has the following two aspects: First, the self-discipline of journalists, the media industry by the industry to develop the appropriate statute to carry out self-restraint, comply with common industry; Second, outside society hope the journalists how to do, depend on the concept of ethical, legal and public opinion on the news and the principles of ethical values. Most scandal reports were related to the news behind the public interest. So it is of course one of the focused area from the audience and the media. The media involved in the scandal reports is the necessity or the requirement of its social functions such as warning information, monitoring the environment, and guiding the social value, et al. after the commercialization in the media, scandal coverage is no longer confined to its specific role but moved gradually away from the journalistic ethics of values in order to maximize the commercial interests by means of exaggerating or bragging scandals in certain ways. This body of this paper included four major parts with more than 35000 words: The first part explains the major concepts about scandals, media scandals, scandal coverage and journalistic ethics and etc. It is noteworthy that the text introduced and quoted the"scandal-mediated theory" and the"media scandal theory", and based on these two theories, the author has made a new definition to the"scandal reports". In the second part, the author has analyzed the different roles of the media in reporting the scandals through the collection of a number of reported cases of scandal. In the meantime, it summarized five kinds of legitimate roles and five inappropriate roles, according to the theory of"scandal clock". It is noteworthy to mention that these roles may appear in different stages of"scandal Clock" or may overlap at some stage, or even appear in some cases with parts of the roles. So, to illustrate the problem, we have selected a representative case for each role, but do not mean that the specific case can play only one role in the report. The third part is following to the second part. It analyzed the improper roles of media in the scandal reports, which involved in the ethical issues, and compared with the major journalistic ethics. Finally, in conclusion, there are mainly five aspects of the conflicts and contradictions. Moreover, the author has summarized four main reasons to these conflicts and contradictions through the idea of the mass-the mediathe audience. The fourth part is the in-depth analysis, which aimed to ask questions and find solutions. These questions covered a lot of areas. The author is looking for strategies from the news-based, monitoring mechanisms and the media quality three aspects to meet their needs. In conclusion, facing the market-oriented media, it is worthy of every journalistic practitioner and researchers' thoughts about how to balance their commercial interests and social interests and play their proper functions and roles in reporting the scandals. And, to avoid the improper roles during the media coverage of the scandal, just as difficult as to avoid the negative function of the media, we can only do the"minimum harm".
