  • This article examines representative Hollywood films on Xizang-related themes, systematically reviewing the narrative discourse of Hollywood movies on Xizang from the 1930s to the present. It analyzes the portrayal of Xizang and the discursive strategies and underlying logic of human rights expressions regarding China in these films. Through an in-depth interpretation and synthesis of these movies, the article aims to reveal the systematic patterns formed by Hollywood in its narrative strategies, visual presentation, and discursive expressions. It also explores the ideological tendencies and romanticized cultural values embedded in Hollywood’s depiction of Xizang human rights issues, while offering countermeasures.Aside from the introduction and conclusion, the article is divided into four sections:The first section focuses on the construction of Xizang’s image in Hollywood films and their human rights discourse. By systematically analyzing the content selection, visual emphasis, and biased interpretations in these movies, the article identifies four typical “virtual” images of Xizang. Additionally, the films employ fabricated events, fictional individual tragedies, and portrayals of personal heroism to depict the Chinese government as the “villain” accused of “violating” religious freedom, life security, cultural rights, and the right to development and survival. The films adopt a “dual othering” narrative strategy, presenting Xizang as a “persecuted sacred land” while portraying the Chinese government as the “oppressor”, thereby creating a stark binary opposition. This narrative approach, through visual impact and emotional manipulation, guides international public opinion toward bias and reinforces the Western perception of the Chinese government in a negative light. The second section reveals how both official and civilian forces in the West jointly promote the export of the Xizang image and human rights narrative. The interaction between Hollywood, the U.S. government, and the 14th Dalai Lama facilitates the cultural construction and dissemination of Xizang’s image and human rights issues. Meanwhile, during the creative process, the filmmakers often incorporate their personal biases and political inclinations into the plot design and narrative framework, reinforcing the stereotyping and simplification of Xizang’s image and solidifying the perception of Xizang as “oppressed”. Additionally, film awards and international film festivals collaborate to enhance the global exposure of these films. By means of awards, nominations, and festival screenings, they expand the dissemination channels and increase the international recognition of the films’ political content. The third section analyzes the political and cultural logic behind the narrative patterns of Hollywood’s Xizang-related films. The narrative construction of these films is deeply influenced by the entrenched “Orientalism” in Western society and the political prejudices inherited from the Cold War era. Xizang is portrayed as the “Other” of Western culture, symbolizing a “spiritual sanctuary” offering an escape from the dilemmas of modernization and a means of soul renewal. This narrative approach caters to the Western stereotype of Xizang as mystical, primitive, and spiritually powerful, erasing its authentic reality. As a result, Xizang becomes an idealized construct in the Western cultural imagination, further deepening misunderstandings and one-sided perceptions of Xizang in the West. The fourth section explores the impact of Hollywood’s Xizang-related films on image construction and human rights expression, as well as corresponding countermeasures. Through high box office revenues, endorsements from mainstream media, public opinion approval, and the collaboration of newly established organizations and institutions, these films strengthen Hollywood’s influence on Xizang-related narratives. Consequently, they deepen the international community's biases and misconceptions regarding Xizang. In response to these entrenched misunderstandings and prejudices, it is necessary to actively strengthen autonomous narratives and cultural dissemination. This requires fully leveraging the role of scholars, think tanks, and other civil society groups to build a more internationally competitive communication system. The goal is to transform the image of Xizang from a “politicized Xizang” into a “cultural Xizang”, presenting a multidimensional, diverse, and authentic image of Xizang to the world.
