  • dc.description.abstract
  • Visualized latent fingerprints are among the most important types of evidence for individual identification. Yet, their efficacy would be compromised or even hindered if the fingerprints were deposited for long time, incomplete patterns, few residuals liable for visualization, and/or kept on objects of complicated surfaces(wet, rough, colorful, irregular profile and as such). However, the other valuable personal information could be provided of the donor if the evidence was revealed from the fingerprint residues that relate to DNA, gender, age, blood type, personal habit, health status and other foreign materials(drugs, explosive/gunshot residues, environmental contaminants). Nanomaterials and nanotechnology will play their roles in testing the above-mentioned substances and information from fingerprint residues when combined with spectral and spectroscopy imaging and immunological techniques. Therefore, the fast, accurate and effective analytical methods, established on the functional new nanomaterials/technology, are very important and of high attention paid for forensic scientists. After a brief introduction to latent fingerprint, this review presents the progresses of nanomaterials applying in the analysis of fingerprints residues based on the most relevant literatures on the topic, elucidating the current situation of nanomaterial-based donor profiling. Finally, perspectives on such novel detection approaches are discussed.
