Formulaic Language in Second Language Acquisition:A Review

This paper argues for the need of the reappraisal of the formulaic aspect of language in second language acquisition by drawing insights from recent development in applied linguistics, psycholinguistics and corpus linguistics. This library study begins by reviewing the dual-nature view of language in relation to formulaic aspect of language. Then, a brief survey of evidence from corpus linguistics is provided to demonstrate the formulaicity of language. What follows is the discussion of rehearsal and implicit learning vis-a-vis memory from the perspective of psycholinguistics. After that, the role of formulaic language in second language acquisition is examined by taking stock of empirical findings that have accumulated in this area. Finally, by way of conclusion, how the formulaicity of language can shed light on second/foreign language teaching theory is illustrated.
