  • Resultative verb compound (RVC) is a special kind of Mandarin construction which has its unique semantic and syntactic features. These features are thoroughly examined in terms of composition, decomposition, causation and co-occurrence with functional words. This leads to the conclusion that a construction to be called a RVC must be subject to the following constraints: it must be composed of two components: verb and complement, the former indicating the causing action or event, and the latter the resulting state or event; there is no distance between the verb and the complement, and no insertion is allowed; it must be able to undergo semantic decomposition, and the relation between the two decomposed readings must be causative, with the first the causing event and the second the caused event; and it must be able to co-occur with the aspect le, indicating the finish of an action, otherwise, it must be connected with such functional words as jiang, yao and hui, indicating possibilities or future events, but it must not co-occur with zheng, indicating continuity and process of an action.
